Normally the lunch hour for Malaysian is 12.00 noon to 2.30pm. Well a part of Malaysian usually take brunch, just like me..hehe.. and believe it or not, some stalls open for lunch meals at as early as 10.30 am!
here in Malaysia, u have no worries in getting foods. We're 24/7 foods' heaven...
Let me start the kick with LUNCH... Malaysian love lunch, normal lunch is basically rice which served with various type of side dish which we call Nasi Campur in malay or as translate to english its Mixed Rice/Ricebox. as u may know, Asian country is the largest rice consumer and producer. so majority food that serve here is rice. no matter its indian, malay or chinese, they all love rice (except runaway models, they hate it..haha). these side dishes can be as minimum as 5 types and can go up to 50 types! crazy huh?
normally these dishes is mild to spicy taste as malaysian eats chillies a lot. but, no worries, if u cant have spicy food, they're also prepare like chicken soup etc.
the mixed rice stalls usually look like this:
you may get this at street hawkers, restaurant, or even in hotels' coffee house!! well hereby i will give you the top 10 side dishes which Malaysian love:
10. Kurma Kambing
*or as known as mutton cream curry
*not spicy, usually the curry mixed with potato and tomatoes
*its taste so creamy as it made with cocnut milk and herbs
9. Sayur Campur
*or mixed vege
*the most popular is carrot,oyster mushrooms & cabbage stirfried with shrimps and oyster sauce
*not spicy at all
8. Ayam Masak Merah
*direct translation to english is Red Chicken
*have two types: cooked with tomato sauce or chilli paste
*sometimes the hawkers will put in raw tomatoes,peas or potatoes in
7. Daging Masak Kicap
*direct translation is Black Beef
*cooked with dark soy sauce and black pepper
*normally potatoes or french beans will add in
6. Masak Lemak Cili Api Rebung
*or as known as Bamboo shoot in spicy creamy soup
*the soup made from coconut milk,turmeric, thai chillies and shrimp paste
*its really spicy but i bet u will love it!
*can be found in various type : cow's tummy, prawns, cockles or fish etc
5. Ikan Bakar
*or char-grilled fish wrapped in banana leaf
*nice to eat with 'kuah assam' or tamarind juice with shallots and chillies
*lots of fish types
4. Ayam Goreng Berempah
* or fried chicked with herbs
*the chicken will be marinated overnight with lemongrass, ginger, shallots, garlic, honey and soy sauce
3. Ulam-ulaman dan sambal belacan/ Cencalok/ tempoyak/ budu
*its mixed malay salad
*the side sauce is sambal belacan (shrimp paste sauce), cencalok (salted fermanted shrimp), tempoyak (fermanted durians) or budu (fermanted anchovies sauce)
*its a MUST HAVE for malays
2. Various curries
*chicken/beef/fish/mutton curries
*potatoes,brinjal or ladiesfinger will add into the curries
1. Sambal Udang Petai
*its prawns cooked with chilli paste and Petai beans (Parkia speciosa)*Petai beans is bears long, flat edible beans with bright green seeds the size and shape of plump almonds which have a rather peculiar smell, characterised by some as being similar to natural gas but believe me its taste good!
